About Macro Lab

Macro Lab gathers Sri Lanka’s official economic statistics in one place, checks them against each other and links every figure to the publication it came from.

What is here

27,322 series across 16 topics, from 1881 to the latest release: prices, national accounts, money and interest rates, the external sector, public finance and debt, jobs, population and more. Each has its own page with a chart, the values, the source documents and a download. Sri Lanka’s credit ratings from Fitch, Moody’s and S&P are on a page of their own, every rating action with its date and source, and so is the yield curve, on any trading day since 2020. World rates sets interest rates, bond yields, currencies and oil abroad beside Sri Lanka’s own, each working day.

Where the numbers come from

From three official publishers: the Department of Census and Statistics, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Finance. Macro Lab reads their published tables and files. Every series page links to the original documents on the publisher’s own website; Macro Lab does not host copies of them.

How they are checked

  • Where two agencies publish the same figure, the two are compared, and any difference is recorded on the series page.
  • Series that run across several base years are checked where the bases overlap.
  • Rates an agency publishes are recalculated from its own index, and unusual values are flagged.
  • When an agency revises a figure, the earlier value is kept: series with revisions can be shown as they were published on an earlier date.

Articles

Articles are short reads built on the data. Each is written either by one of our team members or by MacroLab AI. An article by MacroLab AI is drafted by AI and reviewed by the MacroLab team before it is published, and it says who reviewed it and when. Every number in an article is read from the warehouse when the site is built, so it cannot drift from the data.

Using the data

Every series can be downloaded as CSV or JSON from its page. The charts and text on this site are licensed under CC BY 4.0; the underlying figures belong to the agencies that publish them.
