Source discrepancies
What the warehouse found when it checked this series: the same figure from two agencies, splice overlaps, published rates against ones recalculated from the index, and outliers.
- Error in the sourceMay 2016
The value moves 922% in one period, from 184 to 1,881, far outside its usual range.
Outlier: 184 and 1,881.1, difference 922.3.
moves 922% from 2016-04-01, 547 deviations outside this series' own normal; check the source
CBSL Data Library serves 1,881.10 for 2016-05; its own month-on-month series implies 188.05. Flagged from both sides, entering and leaving the spike.
- Error in the sourceJun 2016
The value moves 90% in one period, from 1,881 to 188.8, far outside its usual range.
Outlier: 1,881.1 and 188.8, difference −90.
moves -90% from 2016-05-01, 542 deviations outside this series' own normal; check the source
CBSL Data Library serves 1,881.10 for 2016-05; its own month-on-month series implies 188.05. Flagged from both sides, entering and leaving the spike.
- Error in the sourceMay 2016
The published rate is 965.8%; recalculated from the index it is 6.6%. Compared with
LK.CPI.CCPI.2006-07.CORE.YOY.M.Published vs recalculated: 6.6 and 965.78, difference −959.18.
published year-on-year vs recomputed from the index
Consequence of the same typo: the published year-on-year is 6.6%, recomputing from the corrupted index gives 966%.
- Error in the sourceMay 2016
The value jumps from 184 to 1,881 and back, the pattern of a misplaced decimal point.
Reversion: 184 and 1,881.1, difference 1,697.1.
184 -> 1,881 -> 188.8: away and back within two periods, the shape of a misplaced decimal point
Same value. This is the check that identifies it precisely: away and back inside two months.
- Error in the source
The two base years overlap for 36 months (Jan 2014 – Dec 2016). Over those months the ratio between them runs from 0.0478 to 0.488; the splice uses 0.479. Compared with
LK.CPI.CCPI.2013.CORE.M.Splice overlap: 0.048 and 0.488, difference 0.44.
36 overlapping months 2014-01-01..2016-12-01, factor 0.478700; left out of the factor: 2016-05-01
The 2016-05 typo falls inside the 36-month overlap, which is why the ratio spread is so wide where every other splice spans a few per cent. An earlier version of this note said the splice used the median and was unharmed; it used the mean, and the typo pulled the 2006/07-to-2013 core factor from 0.6204 to 0.6049, leaving the spliced core index about 2.4% too low for 2003-2013. The splice now leaves out any month more than 50% from the overlap's median - wide enough that the genuine drift between differently weighted indices is kept - and names it in the check.
- For information
The two base years overlap for 41 months (Jan 2008 – May 2011). Over those months the ratio between them runs from 0.329 to 0.354; the splice uses 0.337. Compared with
LK.CPI.CCPI.2002.CORE.M.Splice overlap: 0.329 and 0.354, difference 0.025.
41 overlapping months 2008-01-01..2011-05-01, factor 0.336977
Every splice reports the spread of its overlapping-month ratios so the chain factor can be judged. A few per cent is normal.
